Like all things, Millennials and Gen Z put a whole new spin on this trend, so, even if you’re a child of the 90s, you’ll want to keep reading!

Below, I’ll walk you through a few simple steps to pull off that “big hair, don’t care” 90s-era blowout with a more modern twist.

• Blow dryer
• Heat protectant spray

How to do 90s blowout hairstyle at home

The 90s blowout trend is great on so many levels (or, more accurately, layers). It enhances your hair’s volume, makes it super silky, and perhaps most important of all, it’s actually pretty low-maintenance. Here’s how to get it.

Step 1: Wash your hair

Comb out tangles (use a good detangling spray if necessary), then, let it dry naturally for a bit. It should be at least 70-80% dry before you style it.

If you can’t wait that long, don’t worry, you won’t ruin your locks entirely by starting the process earlier. Just make sure you give it a good (but gently) towel-dry with a microfiber towel.

As Dr. Dominic Burg tells Well + Good, “It is important to remove as much surface water as possible before you start blow-drying…”

Burg adds, “If you are trying to blow-dry hair that is saturated and covered with water it will take much longer and require more heat—remember the length of time that the hair is wet and the temperature used to dry it are the two most damaging factors. [1]

Step 2: Apply a heat protectant.

Using a round brush, divide your hair into four sections: top, left, right, and back.

If you have super-thick or very long hair, you may actually want to do more than four sections. Basically, you just want to create manageable chunks, so use your judgment.

Step 5: Begin blow drying

Begin with the left section of your hair. With a round brush, brush the end of your hair towards your face. Hold on firmly. After you have completed one part, use a roller to roll your hair upwards and fasten it with a hair clip or bobby pins.

Do this for the entire left section.

Repeat the same for the right section.

You can also create waves with a roller brush as an alternative. If you’re using a roller brush, curl from the base and away from your face.

Step 6: Finish the top and back sections

The only difference between these and the other sections is that you have to move the brush from hair ends to hair roots. Remember that you want your curls to be loose.

Complete the back portion of your hair in the same manner, then fix it with rollers and pins.

If you’re using Velcro rollers, use your hairdryer to provide heat all over for 10-15 minutes once you’ve finished rolling. Your curls will not be bouncy if you do not use heat.

Step 7

Now, you have two options: either leave all the rollers in your hair for 10-15 minutes or apply a hair spray to keep the look in place. Either way is good, but I prefer letting the rollers sit.

Step 8

For the exciting part, now that your hair is in place, flip it from side to side to find your parting. You can choose between a center part or a side part.
